Pickett Brewing in Pigtown

Pickett Brewing Opens in Pigtown

"Pigtown", also known as Washington Village, is a neighborhood in southwest Baltimore, only a half-mile from Camden Yards and Ravens Stadium. The neighborhood got its name in the late 1800s when the area was the site of butcher shops and meat packing plants to process pigs.

Pigtown: New Beer Hotspot

With Pickett Brewing and Suspended Brewing already with a presence, and Checkerspot Brewing moving to the neighborhood soon, plus Wico Street Brewing (already brewing) is planning on opening their taproom, Pigtown is becoming a modern craft beer hotspot.

In September, I walked into Pickett Brewing, at the time they had only been open for a few weeks. I was soon talking to owners Jason Howard (and head brewer) and Kate Conway. It was their first event with Greg’s Shitty Trivia (who seems to be on the schedule for nearly every Baltimore venue) and the taproom was packed, with beer and good vibes flowing.

Neighbors Open a Brewery

Jason and Kate are neighbors and Jason was an avid home brewer, anxious to share his creations with neighbors. Two years ago they decided it was time to leave the corporate world and open Pickett Brewery. Today they are working from a 7 brewing barrel-system, brewing a variety of classic beer styles. Currently they are testing local distribution by moving some kegs to local restaurants.

Blown Away

Not knowing exactly what to expect when opening a brewery, Jason said the were “blown away” from great support from other breweries. And, so far the crowds have blown them away with each event presenting a different group of customers, whether locals walking in or fans coming over from the major sporting events. Sometimes they just have to throw open the doors and move kegs out to accommodate the line of enthusiastic beer drinkers. Customer favorites to date have been Short Jorts Cream Ale and Pigtown Pale Ale.

Great Vibes

Picketts has a good vibe. I've been to several trivia night events at other breweries and this one was different. There was a good energy flowing. The taproom is bright and open, inviting. Jason and Kate work hard to see that customers are attended to.

Pickett’s motto is, “A good day is only a beer away.” Stop in and you will see why.
